Academics

Excel Academy is structured into three academic divisions.  This structure allows staff to concentrate on students’ intellectual, social, and developmental needs. Additionally, the school divisions facilitate student instruction and age appropriate groupings, foster a stronger school culture, create smaller academic environments, and allow teachers to more closely monitor and evaluate student progress.

The Lower School Division (Pre-School to 3rd Grade)
1st Grade (2009-10)

The foundation of academic excellence is laid in the early childhood and early elementary years. For even our youngest scholars, Excel Academy teachers set BIG academic goals, and design and implement projects, activities, and units of study.  Believing that a child’s first experience with school must be structured, positive, and spark an innate curiosity for learning, Excel Academy encourages the full growth of a young mind.   Excel Academy teachers focus on the building blocks of literacy, numeracy, writing, and social development.  Targeted whole group instruction is enhanced by meaningful activities and exploration at a variety of learning centers.  Teachers make connections from one topic to the next, and weave strands from all curricular areas into the academic day.  Excel Academy is committed to student mastery of the basics, while simultaneously pushing girls to expand their academic knowledge and personal experiences.

The Intermediate School Division (4th and 5th Grades)
Beginning in 2012

Excel’s Intermediate school division builds on the Lower school division’s solid foundation of academic skills, community responsibility, and curiosity towards learning.  During the 4th and 5th grade years, girls develop a sense of confidence and accomplishment.  Students demonstrate a marked proficiency in reading, writing, mathematics, social studies, and science.  Excel Academy continues to use proven research based curriculum, including Saxon Math, Power Writing, and FOSS to ensure students have a broad understanding of the academic basics.  As they prepare to enter the upper grades, girls are encouraged to take more risks and become comfortable and confident academic scholars.

The Upper School Division (6th-8th Grades)
Beginning in 2014

The Upper school division is targeted at preparing our young scholars for the District’s academically rigorous private and public college preparatory high schools.  With college graduation as the ultimate goal, Excel Academy students in the upper grades dig deeply into the incisive, complex thinking required in high school and college.  Upper School girls take advanced math courses, participate in literature circles, write analytical essays, develop and conduct independent science research projects, and engage in formal debates.  Students refine their essential learning and study skills in preparation for high school.  At the culmination of their eighth grade year, Excel Academy scholars have the academic, social, and personal confidence to tackle problems successfully.
